The Tampa Branch of AAUW was established in 1916 and is the oldest branch in Florida. Members are dedicated and committed to promoting and supporting the efforts of women and girls in finding equality in schools, the workplace, and in the community.

Meet some of our Members

Paula Huzella, Recording Secretary
Ms. Huzella has a B.S. in Computer Science from the University of Georgia. She has 25+ years of experience as a software engineer and system architect in the areas of finance, transportation, health insurance, and the electronic medical record (EMR).  She has 15+ years of experience as a contractor with the Department of Defense and is currently serving as the Senior Solutions Architect for a Service-Disabled Veteran-Owned Small Business (SDVOSB) Cybersecurity company. She joined AAUW Tampa branch 4 years ago. She is currently the Recording Secretary. Ms. Huzella brings her enthusiasm for promoting STEM to the Tampa Branch.

Demetrix Rostick-Owens, Director of Communications
Dr. Rostick-Owens comes to AAUW Tampa from Georgia with 20+ years of experience working with adult learners, students, faculty, and administrators in higher education. She specializes in academic advising and coaching, academic success programs, and student leadership development.

Her knowledge in education and organization skills have found a special place at AAUW Tampa. Dr. Rostick-Owens has remastered The Tiempo newsletter into something that everyone can enjoy. She provides the branch and the community with the goings-on of the branch and brings a warm and welcoming energy to anyone wanting to know more about AAUW Tampa. She has even earned recognition at the State level!

Ebony Shoemo, Director of Finances
Dr. Shoemo is a proud Army Veteran. Her specialty lies in the management of hospitals and healthcare administration. She is very detailed oriented and adheres to all timeline lines. These are crucial traits required for the Director of Finance. Her love for education and encouragement of young girls and women in the STEM fields shows through her dedication to AAUW Tampa’s ranch.
